Utam végére értem, Akkor kelt épp a hold, S láttam, a messzeségben Az ős Tevere folyt. Erdőt lakott a romkert, Halk dombot a palota, A lugasokra hold kelt – De szép vagy, Itália!
Gondoltam, hajnalodik, lám, A föld felragyogott. Egy pásztor állt a sziklán, Magányos, elhagyatott. Kérdeztem káprázatban: Messze van Róma még? Rám nézett, mozdulatlan: Hová tevé az eszét? Most felkacag egy parasztlány, S a szőlők közt elenyész.
