Cold Spring in Essex (English)
Small boy in a black hat walks among streaky shadows
Under my window, and I am at ease this morning.
This day reminds me of Budapest. All over
Europe is the North and Protestantism has conquered.
The Roman Catholic North in the black-oak cabinet of Antwerp
Is an irreplaceable grace-note, as at Sawston
The manorial chapel of the Huddlestons for the pilgrims
'Which of them will make a good death?' my friend in Antwerp
Wondered through the plateglass over beer and coffee
Looking to the end.
But I am happy this morning,
Looking into my garden, seeing the cold light standing
Oblique to the grey-green tree-trunks and the grasses,
All over my illimitable future. Uploaded by | P. T. |

Essex hideg tavasza (Hungarian)
Árnysávok közt fekete kalapos kisfiú megy
Ablakom alatt, s jól vagyok ma reggel.
Ez a nap Budapestet idézi. Egész Európa:
Észak, s hódítója a protestantizmus.
A római katolikus Észak, ott Antwerpen festőtölgy-kabinetjében,
Pótolhatatlan ékítmény, amiképp Sawstonban
A Huddlestonok urasági kápolnája a zarándokoknak.
„Melyiküké lesz jobb halál?" kérdi antwerpeni barátom,
És tűnődve tekint a sör s a kávé felett a vastag
Üvegablakon át valami vég felé.
De én boldog vagyok ma reggel,
Ahogy kertembe kinézek, s látom, ahogy a rézsútos,
Hideg fény befogja, szürkés-zöld fatönkök s füvek
Függőlegesei közt, korlátlan jövőmet.
