Radnóti Miklós: Picture postcards (1-2) (Razglednicák (1-2) in English)
1944. augusztus 30. A hegyek közt
2 Kilenc kilométerre innen égnek a kazlak és a házak, s a rétek szélein megülve némán riadt pórok pipáznak. Itt még vizet fodroz a tóra lépő apró pásztorleány s felhőt iszik a vízre ráhajolva a fodros birkanyáj.

Picture postcards (1-2) (English)1 The wild, thick sound of cannons rolls over from Bulgaria, drums the ridge, wavers, falls; a crowd of men, beasts, wagons and thoughts, the road rears, it neighs, retreats, the sky runs mane aflutter. You are the constant in me in this moving confusion, you shine in the depth of my awareness, motionless, mute, like an angel admiring destruction, or an insect that buries itself within a rotting tree.
2 Hay stacks and houses are burning nine kilometres from here and worried pipe-smoking peasants quietly sit around the meadows’ edges. A tiny shepherd-girl still makes ripples here as she steps on the lake, and her wavy-haired flock drinks the clouds whilst bending down to water.
