Rankov, Pavol: Us and them, them and us (My a oni / Oni a my in English)
|
My a oni / Oni a my (Slovak)Tí ľudia boli iní ako my. Nebolo to jednoduché. Ich žiadosť by som predniesol priamo ministrovi. On im najskôr oznámil podmienky, v akých žijú. Navyše vedenie tábora tam plánuje začať so systematickým školským vzdelávaním. Žiadnej z nás to nevadí a nepripisujeme tomu nijaký význam. To by bolo úžasné, žiť opäť s manželkou a deťmi kdesi vonku.
Us and them, them and us (English)
These people were different from us; as if they didn’t even want to keep their destiny in their own hands. They were resigned, but I wouldn’t call it humility. I’d got to know them quite well and I reckoned they honestly believed that everything would suddenly turn round and the whole nine-year war would be flushed away like a bad dreamed after the alarm clock goes off. They weren’t passive; it was a more a pent-up impatience that was going to happen had to happen. They’d only spoil things so it was better to wait. |
